Online Piano Lessons

I have been offering online lessons for many years now for students who live in different parts of the country of for those who cannot make  in-person lessons due to illness or inclement weather. Even for those who normally have in-person lessons, we find that the ease of moving from in person to online allows us to maintain a more regular schedule.

I teach using the Zoom platform, but you do not have to have a Zoom account to join in. You just click on the link I send.

What students need:

To start:

It is best if the student uses a laptop computer and connects to an external speaker.

The laptop needs to be angled so that I can see the student’s keyboard.

Better:

If the student purchases a USB microphone, that transmits a better sound back to me. 

Use whatever you have, but possible examples would be: 

Shure USB Microphone MV5 (Amazon: $99)

Blue Yeti USB Microphone (Amazon: $129)

An external camera (ex. Logitech C920, Amazon price of $99.99) would allow the student to click between the keyboard view and a view of themselves allowing a little more flexibility and ease in sharing between us.

What I have:

I have 2 AKG microphones for my Steinway grand piano and a Shure mic for my voice. 

These run through a mixer board to have more flexibility for fine tuning volume.

The mixer board connects to my computer, and my computer connects to external speakers.

I always want to try to aim for the best sound quality we can reasonably have. It is most important for the teacher to have the best setup possible so the student can have the best aural experience.

I have cameras that show an overview of the keyboard so that you can see my fingers, and a side view to see hand/arm movement. 

For Young Students

It is important to have the parent with the child to be my hands and to take notes. Parents or practice partners do not need any prior musical experience. One of the benefits is that both the parent and the child will be learning.on statement. Don’t have one? Now might be a good time to create one and post it here.
